New challenges bring increased risks in combating child sexual abuse, exploitation.

Despite some progress made globally, children around the world still face serious and evolving risks of being sold, sexually exploited and abused, the UN independent human rights expert on the sale, sexual exploitation and sexual abuse of children , Mama Fatima Singhateh, warned on Monday. “There is a deeper understanding of the interconnectedness of these crimes,” Ms. Singhateh said. “We are also witnessing stronger international cooperation, more victim-centred approaches and deeper involvement from the private sector. However, despite these achievements, the scale and severity of abuses against children remain alarming and worrying.” Far too many children around the world are still being trafficked, sexually exploited and abused, Ms. Singhateh stated in her final report to the Geneva-based United Nations Human Rights Council , adding that these crimes are often hidden, perceived as normal or fail to receive due attention. ‘Alarming increase’ in recruitment of children into gangs in Haiti.

  The big picture. The Caribbean nation is in the grip of a deepening security, humanitarian and governance crisis. Armed gangs control large swathes of the capital Port-au-Prince and beyond, displacing families and restricting access to schools, healthcare and basic services. Poverty is worsening for the most vulnerable families, and children are increasingly susceptible to gang recruitment, in order to earn money. Services to protect children are overstretched or absent, leaving minors at risk in neighborhoods where gangs exert control. What’s happening: Extortion and control At least 26 gangs, with names like 103 Zombies, Village de Dieu, Tokyo and Kraze Barye, operate in Port-au-Prince and surrounding areas. They control territory, violently extort communities and fight the beleaguered Haitian security forces for dominance. This high-level event, co-hosted by the World Childhood Foundation, the Permanent Mission of Sweden to the United Nations, and the Office of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Violence against children , will provide an opportunity to identify concrete progress achieved in advancing the protection and wellbeing of children , while addressing remaining challenges. Over half the world's children are exposed to violence every year. This violence takes many forms and occurs in many settings, both online and offline. Children's lives are often marked by a continuum of violence. Violence has devastating and lifelong impacts on children's health and wellbeing.
